The Study Skills Your Child Needs
The problem with most study skills programs is that they focus on theory. Students work in groups of three or five to one, and learn a particular skill or strategy from a workbook. Under this approach they gain little or no practical experience applying it to their own school work.
Our approach is different. With a StudyPoint Transitions tutor your child will work one-on-one with a personal study skills coach. The focus of each lesson is on learning and applying new skills, and also on reviewing how well your child has implemented previous strategies into his or her study habits. Our goal is to be practical and relevant, to keep what is working, and to revisit skills repeatedly until they become habits. We use your child's own notebooks and textbooks, and apply study aids and organizational systems based on his or her own schoolwork.
Equally important is the way in which each lesson serves as an opportunity for goal setting. On a weekly basis your child's tutor will help him or her plan for the week ahead, and where applicable, will help your child set performance goals for any important tests, quizzes, or other assignments.
In reality study skills are study habits, and building good habits takes time, encouragement, and repetition. That what our Transitions program is all about.
