University of Washington Admissions Information

University of Washington
Seattle, Washington (map)

As the first public university on the West Coast, the University of Washington currently serves more students than any other institution in the Northwest. Founded in 1861, the UW campus sits just 5 miles outside of downtown Seattle, fostering a smaller community feel but maintaining accessibility to a larger city. The school also features two extension campuses in Tacoma and Bothell, both of which offer professional and continuing education programs.

As evidenced by the 93% retention rate from first to second year, students enjoy their experiences at UW. Though it is a large, public university, UW provides a wide array of resources to its students. For instance, in any given year nearly 4,500 undergraduates participate in research, 2,000 students study abroad, and more than 20,000 courses are offered. Even as a university of more than 30,000 students, the average class size remains small at 28 students and the student to professor ratio is only 9:1, a statistic comparable to that of many small liberal arts colleges.

Admissions Information

The University of Washington is considered moderately selective with an admission rate of 58%. However, it is important to note that only 16% of the student body is from out of state and nearly 86% of those accepted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school class.

According to the admissions website, the committee uses an individualized application review to assess each applicant based on two categories: Academic Preparation/ Performance and Personal Achievements/ Characteristics. These categories include (but are not limited to) GPA, standardized test scores, positive grade trends, rigor of course load (with special attention paid to senior year), leadership and community commitment.

It is important to note that the online UW application does not request letters of recommendation or official transcripts. With this in mind, the applicant should be sure to express him or herself well through required essays and narratives about activities. The admissions website recommends that applicants use the application to tell UW more about their personal character and interests.
