College Admissions Profiles

Schools whose athletic teams participate in Division I games are the most traditionally competitive. Division I teams are most often thought to be those with the most financial dedication; schools in the division often have the most elaborate athletic facilities, highest budgets, and most athletic scholarships. Many large state schools compete in Division I, as do all Ivy League schools (in a specially designated division). All Division I schools must field teams in at least seven different sports, with two team sports for each gender. Currently, there are 346 Division I schools, and the NCAA has established a moratorium stating that no school may be considered to move into the division until at least 2012.
