Drexel Admissions Information

Drexel University
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (map)

Founded in 1891 by financier and philanthropist Anthony J. Drexel, Drexel University is a private institution committed to providing students a strong, well-rounded education with a focus on work experience, research and technology. In fact, Drexel is considered Philadelphia’s technological university. In a nod to this technology-friendly reputation, Drexel was the first university requiring all students to have microcomputers–in 1983!

Furthermore, Drexel is known for its use of co-operative education as part of the undergraduate learning process. In 1919, a career-focused co-op program was founded, which was among the first of its kind in the U.S. Today, the program continues to excel as one of the country’s largest and most diverse. A majority of students complete an 18 month, full-time work experience relating to their specific academic interests during their undergraduate career. The system provides boundless hands-on academic opportunity for Drexel students; currently, students are employed by more than 1,500 businesses and organizations in 27 states and 12 countries through the co-op program.

Admissions Information

Drexel University's acceptance rate is 55%, making it a moderately selective university. Admissions proceed via a rolling process, so the earlier that a student submits all information, the sooner he or she will receive a decision. However, it is important to note that there are different deadlines depending on a student's interests. For instance, January 15 is the deadline for those students who would like to be considered for the A. J. Drexel Scholarship. Furthermore, Drexel is not an exclusive user of the Common Application. In other words, the Common Application is available for Drexel, but there is also the option to complete a Drexel-specific application available on the admissions website.

According to the school's admissions website, it is important that an applicant submit his or her application with all required and supplemental information. Furthermore, the factors that are most closely considered include: rigor of secondary school record, class rank, academic GPA and standardized test scores. Other considerations include the personal statement, extracurricular activities and recommendations provided by a teacher and guidance counselor.
