The University of Alabama is a public research university in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Founded in 1831, it is Alabama’s first university. UA is widely recognized for its affordable tuition rates and diverse student body. The University ranks first in the nation for the matriculation and graduation of minority doctoral students under the Southern Regional Education Board’s Minority Doctoral Scholars Program. UA is also one of the top five flagship universities enrolling the most African-American students. The school offers degrees in more than 200 fields of study, including rural medicine, business administration, engineering, educational psychology, and apparel design.

UA is home to a thriving sports scene that is manifested through the school’s cheerful mascot, an elephant named Big Al. Renowned for its rich football history and traditions, UA offers a variety of athletic programs, including diving, gymnastics, basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, and cricket.
