Highly Competitive (10%-20%)

College Admissions Profiles

Highly competitive universities–those accepting between 10 and 20% of all applicants–are extremely selective in the admissions process. Oftentimes, these schools offer small classes and therefore limited seats available for incoming students, which is a factor for their low rates of admittance; examples include schools such as Olin College (with a total enrollment of under 400 students) and Swarthmore College (about 1,500 undergrads). In general, these schools attract a large number of competent applicants, so it is truly the applicant with a slightly unique offering who may end up gaining acceptance over a by-the-books achiever.
