Texas Christian Admissions Information

Texas Christian University
Fort Worth, TX (map)

Located in Fort Worth, a city lauded for its ‘Old West’ feel, Texas Christian University combines an academic environment and a hometown with lots of personality. On the academic end, the school is the largest in the nation to be associated with the Disciples of Christ Church, and has a partnership with the Brite Divinity School, which is a seminary. However, the school mixes secular and religious materials, and is quick to note that students of all faiths are accepted to the university and by its students. Noted as a top national university by U.S. News and World Report, TCU is praised as being within the top 5% of schools for the Advancement of Teaching as a Doctoral/Research university. Texas Christian is certainly on the rise: within three years, the school’s acceptance rate dropped from 53% to 31% in 2011.

Aside from academia, Texas Christian is a welcoming campus for active students. In addition to the nearly 20 religious student organizations, the school offers upwards of 200 secular clubs. Greek life is lively at the university, and nearly 40% of students choose to join a house. At the time of a football game, one will find Carter Stadium packed with fans cheering on the TCU Horned Frogs (especially when competing against their rivals, the SMU Mustangs). Students are notably active in volunteer endeavors; many travel to Mexico on an annual spring break service trip. On the weekends, students flock to downtown Fort Worth, where one might enjoy a casual bull ride at Billy Bob’s, the self-proclaimed “world’s largest honky tonk.”

Admissions Information

Admissions at Texas Christian have become increasingly difficult over time: in recent years, the admittance rate has fallen from 51% to 37% of prospective students. This drop certainly makes TCU a more selective university accepting more academically and extracurricularly involved students. As the competition continues to grow at TCU, it is important that applicants take note of the factors that admission officials note to be especially important.

Primarily, selecting officials at Texas Christian look to factors including an applicant's character, application essay, class rank, GPA, standardized test scores, and recommendations. Still important, though to a lesser degree, are considerations such as the applicant's extracurricular activities, geographical residence, ethnicity, and religious affiliation. Thus, an applicant must assert him or herself as a viable and strong candidate in the eyes of TCU.
