The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a public research university in Madison, Wisconsin. It ranks thirteenth in U.S. News and World Report’s 2011 list of America's Best Public Universities. UW Madison admissions are moderately selective, as the University only admits about 57% of its annual applicant pool. Admissions officials note that a student's class rank, secondary school record, GPA, recommendations, standardized test scores, and state residency are the most important factors in the admissions process. Other factors include an applicant's level of interest, alumni relation, character/personal qualities, application essay, extracurricular activities, work experience, racial/ethnic status, volunteer work, talents/abilities, and whether the candidate is a first -generation college student. The University may waive paper and online application fees for applicants with a demonstrated financial need.
